  • Yes. Many clients come to counselling while also taking medication or receiving care from a GP, psychiatrist, or psychologist. Counsellors can support people with both everyday challenges and complex mental health concerns. While counsellors do not diagnose or prescribe, they provide a safe and supportive space to talk, process experiences, and develop practical coping strategies.

  • Counsellors: Provide talk therapy in a supportive, confidential space. Counselling can be short-term and practical (such as support with grief, relationships, or life changes), but counsellors also work with clients who have complex mental health concerns.

Psychologists: Work with more complex and long-term mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or eating disorders. They are trained to diagnose, use psychometric testing, and create formal treatment plans. Treatment with a psychologist is often longer-term and may extend over months or years.

  • Counselling is not currently covered by Medicare in Australia, so sessions cannot be claimed under a Mental Health Care Plan. Some private health insurance funds do offer rebates for counselling. Please check directly with your provider to see if you are eligible.
